Understanding Academic Citation Styles

A citation has two jobs
In the text
Show the reader which source supports a statement, quotation, idea, or piece of evidence.
In the reference list
Provide enough publication information for the reader to identify and locate the source.
Consistency is essential
Small inconsistencies become noticeable across a long thesis, especially when sources have been gathered over many months.
Follow the rules required for your project
Your department or graduate school may require a particular citation style, edition, or institutional modification.
When institutional instructions differ from a general example, use the requirements that apply to your submission.
